The idea of regular checkups is to identify any dental diseases before they require significant treatment. “Prevention is better than cure”
It is also now recognised that oral health can have an influence on general health.
The best way to save your teeth and keep a healthy smile is to take good preventive measures.

What is the best way to whiten the teeth?
There are many excellent ways to whiten the teeth and all have advantages and disadvantages. Since each case is different there is no one best way.
When staining is present on the surface, the dentist can professionally clean the teeth, often producing a fresher, whiter appearance.
On the other hand, when staining is actually in the tooth, below the surface, there are a number of ways to whiten the teeth. Sometimes simply replacing old, worn out fillings that are failing at the edges can produce better looking front teeth. Alternatively, when the enamel is heavily stained, crowns or facings may be the best option. Dentists have access to continuing education in the latest dental techniques and they can give advice as to the best choices for you.

What should I do in a dental emergency?
Toothache:
A toothache is always a sign that you need to see a dentist as soon as possible. In the meantime you can take pain killers if necessary, if you cannot get to a dentist see your GP for antibiotics, but before you finish your antibiotic course see your local Kallangur Dental team because antibiotics can only stop the infection for few days. If its not treated in time the infection becomes more aggressive.
Knocked out tooth:
If dirty, rinse tooth in milk holding it by the crown (not roots). If not available use water (few seconds only), then put the tooth back in the socket. If the tooth cannot be replanted, wrap in Glad Wrap or place it in milk. Come to your Kallangur dentist within 30 minutes if you can. Time is critical for successful replanting.
Broken tooth:
Try to clean debris from the injured area with warm water. If caused by a blow, place a cold compress on the face next to the injured tooth to minimize swelling. Visit the dentist at Kallangur Dental Surgery as soon as possible.

Do my wisdom teeth (third molars) need to be removed?
It is common for the wisdom teeth to erupt in a way that is not ideal or partially erupt due to lack of space and some times they are misaligned. People often have pain with these wisdom teeth as they become difficult to clean due to incomplete eruption, resulting in food packing, gum disease or tooth decay.
However, not all the people have this teeth, and for those who do, not everybody requires their wisdom teeth to be removed. It is best to have these teeth checked for early detection and management.

Can there be problems with extraction of my wisdom teeth?
Yes, as with any minor or major surgery, bleeding, swelling, post-operative pain, bruising and infection may occur. Other complications include difficulty in opening the mouth due to swelling and sore lips.
There is a risk of nerve damage that may cause temporary or permanent numbness of the lower lip and tongue associated with the extraction of lower wisdom teeth.
